For example, if you have hay fever, you could try to limit your time outdoors in spring and keep the windows and doors shut indoors. If your itchy eyes are caused by an allergy, you could try to limit your exposure to the allergen if possible. Cool gel eye masks also soothe and relieve itchy eyes. This could be a refreshing face cloth dampened with cold water. You can also soothe the itching using a cold compress. Most types of itchy eyes can be relieved using lubricating eye drops, also known as artificial tears. They can take a look and may prescribe you some antibiotic eye drops. For example, taking breaks from prolonged screen use, using a humidifier to stop the air drying out, cutting down on smoking and alcohol, or switching from contact lenses to glasses can help.¹ You can also try to address the underlying cause. You can get lubricating eye drops, called artificial tears, to help alleviate dry and itchy eyes. They often become red when you rub them, due to them being itchy. If you have dry eyes, your eyes may become itchy but not red.

Normally, your eyes produce tears to keep the surface of your eye moist and lubricated, and your eyelids spread the tears evenly across the surface of your eye. Your eyes might be itchy because they’re too dry.
